Cube Gallery - Manchester

Infra_Manc; Exhibition curated by Richard Brook.

This exhibition was based on the processes involved in the procurement, marketing and delivery of key infrastructural projects of the post-war era. The exhibition consisted of artefacts that related to the Mancunian Way, the Pic-Vic tunnel, the Guardian Exchange and the dreams of a city centre heliport.

For me I am really interested in old artefacts, especially when it comes to maps and this gallery was full of the different styles in the way they recorded data in map form. It is the look, the touch and the forgotten memories in the artefact that really appeal to me.

However if it is the underground Manchester that has caught your eye, then the recent discovery of the Pic-Vic tunnel is something you should look into. Situated now underneath the Arndale shopping centre, the tunnel was a proposed rail route beneath the city centre and would have formed the centre piece of a new electrified railway network for the region. It is strange to think that if this had of been created than our Manchester skyline today could have looked a lot different. Was it stopped for the better?

Below shows a collection of photographs that were taken from the tunnels, it is strange to think that below us their is a whole other space that no one really knows about, it would not of even crossed my mind if I had not of gone to the exhibition.
